Adeleke Wins Again: NANS Southwest Says Osun Students Expect a Bigger Education Agenda

OSOGBO — The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke following his victory in the August 15 Osun State governorship election.

The association described the outcome as a renewed mandate that should come with increased responsibility towards students and young people across the state.

Adeleke was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), securing 511,067 votes against 444,815 votes recorded by his closest challenger.

For NANS Southwest, however, the numbers tell only part of the story.

The association said the participation of students and young people across Osun demonstrated their growing importance in the state’s democratic process.

Students around OAU, UNIOSUN, UNILESA, OSCOHEALTH, Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun and Federal College of Education, Iwo, were among those identified by the association as part of the wider student constituency that participated in the election.

According to NANS Southwest Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, the association had spent the period leading to the election encouraging students to collect their PVCs and participate peacefully.

WHAT STUDENTS WANT NEXT

With the election now concluded, the association has shifted attention to governance.

NANS Southwest wants the renewed administration to focus more heavily on education and student welfare.

Its demands include:

1. Better infrastructure across tertiary institutions.
2. Functional healthcare facilities on campuses.
3. Improved security around student communities.
4. Better transportation interventions.
5. More bursaries and scholarships.
6. Entrepreneurship and innovation support.
7. Stronger graduate employment opportunities.
8. A structured channel for government-student engagement.

The association said the students who voted were not merely participating in an election but expressing expectations for the next four years.

NANS Southwest also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his call for a credible election and acknowledged INEC, security agencies, observers, civil society organisations and journalists for their roles.

The student body concluded by congratulating Governor Adeleke and urging him to make the second phase of his administration more student-focused.
