The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has declared its intention to picket major South African business interests across Nigeria. This move comes as a direct response to the renewed wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which recently claimed the lives of two Nigerians.
In a strongly worded press statement released on May 6th, 2026, the NANS Southwest Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode (popularly known as BILLIONCODES), expressed deep outrage over the persistent violence directed at Nigerians living in South Africa.
According to the statement, the killing of two Nigerians is not an isolated incident but part of a “recurring pattern of hostility” that the student body can no longer ignore.
“We categorically state that the continued targeting of Nigerians under any guise is unacceptable and must come to an immediate end,” the statement read.
To register their displeasure, NANS Southwest is mobilizing students for peaceful picketing and mass advocacy targeting South African corporate giants operating within Nigeria. Specifically mentioned were MTN Group and MultiChoice Group (DSTV/GOTV).
The student leadership argued that it is “morally indefensible” for South African businesses to enjoy a peaceful and profitable environment in Nigeria while Nigerians are subjected to fear, violence, and death in South Africa.
NANS Southwest is calling on the South African government to move beyond “symbolic gestures” and “delayed responses.” Their demands include:
- Immediate Protection: A genuine commitment to protecting foreign nationals, especially Nigerians.
- Justice: Swift prosecution and justice for all victims of xenophobic violence.
- Accountability: Recognition of the safety and dignity of Nigerians as a non-negotiable right.
While Comrade Billioncodes noted that the student body remains open to dialogue with diplomatic channels and business representatives, he emphasized that Nigerian students would not sit idly by.
“This is a moment for accountability, responsibility, and decisive action. The safety, dignity, and rights of Nigerians must be guaranteed, not negotiated,”the Coordinator stated.
